Navy Unit Commendation

Awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to any unit the Navy or Marine Corps which has distinguished itself by outstanding heroism in action against the enemy, but not sufficient to justify the award of the Presidential Unit Citation; or to any such unit which has distinguished itself by extremely meritorious service not involving combat but in support of military operations, rendering the unit outstanding compared to other units performing similar service. To justify this award, the unit must have performed service of the character comparable to that which would merit the award of a Silver Star Medal for heroism or a Legion of Merit for meritorious service to an individual.

AUSA 6th Region Distinguished Unit Award

1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry (Fort Lewis)

The Sixth Region Distinguished Unit Commendation is conferred upon the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry, United States Army, in recognition of exemplary service in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM while deployed in Iraq from June 2006 to September 2007.  “Task Force Warhorse” became the epitome of the flexibility that sets America’s Army apart from all others.  Whether reducing sectarian violence in East Rashid, or attacking from march column into the heart of Jaysh al-Mahdi strongholds in Diwaniyah  (for which they were awarded the Valorous Unit Citation), or conducting counterinsurgency operations in the Karkh Security District of Baghdad, the soldiers of 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment returned home knowing they made a positive impact in the lives of the Iraqi people.  The squadron’s distinguished performance of duty reflects great credit upon itself, its Soldiers, the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, I Corps, the Sixth Region, and the Association of the United States Army.

A Link to a New York Post story about the accomplishments of our 1st Squadron in Iraq is here (Posted 31 Aug 07)

LTC Jeffrey Peterson, (Left) CO 1st Sqdn 14th Cav and LTC Mark Freitag, CO 4th Sqdn 14th Cav meet on the battlefield in Baghdad. Situation: 15 Nov 06:  On a main route in Southern Baghdad, terrorists conducted an ambush against an Iraqi National Police convoy. The ambush consisted of RPG and machine gun fire. Several National Police were injured. A troop from 4-14 CAV was transiting the route when they came upon the ambush and began to provide assistance. Like the great cavalry unit they are, 4-14 CAV had three platoons and attack aviation move to the sound of the guns, develop the situation, and restore stability to the situation. Shortly thereafter, units from 1-14 CAV arrived. After a short meeting, 4-14 CAV handed the situation over to 1-14 CAV so they could continue mission. 1-14 CAV coordinated a successful combined assault of the village with a force consisting of Strykers, M1A2 tanks, and National Police. This was a great example of teamwork between 14th Cavalry Squadrons, National Police, and other resources from across the Brigade and highlights the capability of Stryker organizations. It was a great day for Thunderhorse and Warhorse to unexpectedly work together in Baghdad.  Click picture to enlarge.
