At the time of its activation in December 1948 the 1st Battalion was stationed at a fomer Luftwaffe airfield about 25 Km southwest of Kassel.  The nearest town was Fritzlar.  In the summer of 1951 the Battalion moved to the former Wehrmacht kaserne on the west side of Fulda and the kaserne was renamed Downs Barracks.  In May 1960 The Battalion was redesignated as the 1st Squadron and its green on yellow ("spider") guidons were replaced by the traditional red and white cavalry guidons.  The Battalion's Companies A, B, C and Tank then became the Squadron's Troops A, B, C and D respectively.
