George S. Patton Slept Here! General Patton at his HQ at (BAD) Hersfeld in April, 1945
On 30 March 1945, the 37th Tankbattalion (Part of the 3rd US Army under George S. Patton) arrived in the city of Bad Hersfeld. The german commandeur of the city immediately withdrew all of the military units from the city on the 31 March. Part of the units were imprisoned by the Americans. The prisoners included Major Georg August Moeller and Hauptmann Karl Guentzel, the two soldiers which lead the Americans in the city on 31 March 1945. This action saved the city of Bad Hersfeld from the preplanned artillery attack. Mc Pheeters Barracks also known as Kaserne der Kraftfahrabteilung 9 means Motorpool department #9. L.S. short for Luft Schutz means Air Defense. Befehlsstelle means Headquaters. This information comes from: Dave & Beate Cowan (and Uncle Karl).
